The overall project aims at providing knowledge and tools to support analysis, debate and decision-making, in view of facilitating the strict protection of 10% of European seas, as per the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. SPA4OCEAN requires the support of libraries to raise awareness about the importance of ocean protection in their local communities.

Project description

The focus of the project is the preservation of the oceans and the creation of maritime parks. Here is a brief summary:

“In May 2020, the European Commission published the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. According to the strategy, « at least 30% of the land and 30% of the sea should be protected in the EU ». The strategy further specifies that « at least one third of protected areas – representing 10% of land and 10% of sea – should be strictly protected » by 2023. The project aims at providing knowledge and tools to support analysis, debate and decision-making, in view of facilitating the strict protection of 10% of European seas.”

EBLIDA’s role is to disseminate the results of the project and to raise awareness of local communities on sea preservation, via libraries. Considering that the project is intimately tied to SDG 14 (life below water), as well as 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action), and that EBLIDA’s role in it is to raise awareness, this project is perfectly coherent in the EBLIDA programme on the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development (EBLIDA Strategic Plan 2022-2025 – EBLIDA’s commitment towards a sustainable society).

As a participant in this project, your role would be to develop awareness-raising activities within your own local communities. You would have funds allocated to you to do so. EBLIDA would also support you with our own experience, ideas, and connections to the other participating libraries for knowledge-sharing.

The project is estimated to take 3 years, though library involvement might be slightly shorter (e.g. 2.5 years after 6 months of research). The project proposal must be submitted by September 2023.
